1 Year of Transformative Impact: WongPhai’s Journey in Biochar
As we reflect on the first anniversary of our biochar project, we at WongPhai are humbled by the progress we’ve made and excited about the path ahead. From our humble beginnings in January 2023, nestled in the bamboo-rich region of Prachin Buri Province, Thailand, we set out to tackle a pressing issue: the vast amounts of bamboo waste that were polluting the environment and going unused. Today, we celebrate not only our milestones but also the incredible people and communities who have been part of this transformative journey.

Focus on Sustainability and Community
A Vision Rooted in Sustainability and Community
WongPhai was founded on the belief that challenges hold opportunities for growth and innovation. Bamboo has been a cornerstone of livelihoods in Prachin Buri for generations, but the traditional methods of processing bamboo left behind significant waste—offcuts that were either burned, contributing to pollution, or left to decompose.
We saw an opportunity to turn this problem into a solution: transforming bamboo waste into biochar. This incredible product not only sequesters carbon and combats climate change but also enriches soil health, reduces dependency on chemical fertilizers, and creates valuable resources for local communities.
Our mission, however, goes beyond sustainability. We are committed to creating equitable growth, empowering individuals with knowledge, and fostering a resilient, connected community.
What We’ve Achieved in One Year
A core aspect of our success has been the ‘Training the Trainer’ program. By equipping community leaders with the knowledge and skills to manage biochar production and sustainable waste practices, we’ve fostered a network of advocates who share our vision.
Participants in this program have learned to:
- Efficiently produce high-quality biochar using environmentally friendly methods.
- Apply biochar to agricultural soils to improve fertility, water retention, and microbial activity.
- Manage bamboo waste to reduce pollution and maximize economic value.
This program has not only empowered individuals but also strengthened the overall resilience of our community.

Innovative Applications of Biochar
One of the most exciting aspects of our project is the versatility of biochar. Beyond its role in enhancing soil health, we’ve explored innovative applications, such as:
- Pig Farms: Biochar has been applied to septic ponds on pig farms to absorb manure, reducing odors and methane emissions.
- Collaborative Research: We’ve partnered with universities like Chulalongkorn University to study and refine the use of biochar, ensuring its effectiveness in various settings.
These applications demonstrate the far-reaching benefits of biochar for both agriculture and the environment.

A Community-Driven Approach
At WongPhai, we believe that our work is about more than just metrics—it’s about people. Our project is powered by the dedication and hard work of local bamboo growers, kiln operators, and artisans.
Take the story of Auntie Iet, for example. Her family’s bamboo forest, passed down through generations, was once undervalued. Through improved care practices and the integration of biochar, she now earns significantly more per bamboo stalk, transforming her livelihood.
By creating opportunities for disadvantaged members of our community, including older workers and young people, we’ve kept families together and fostered a true sense of “bamboo family.”
Looking Ahead: Scaling Impact and Innovation
While we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, we know there’s much more to do. In the coming years, we aim to:
- Expand biochar production to more sites across Thailand.
- Continue collaborating with researchers and agricultural stakeholders to refine our methods.
- Scale our impact to remove an estimated 36,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2030, applying over 20,300 tonnes of biochar and creating stable jobs for 60 workers.
These goals are ambitious, but we’re confident that with the support of our community and partners, we can achieve them.
