Empowering Communities through Sustainable Biochar
As an established site in January 2023, WongPhai is proud to begin its journey of turning challenges into opportunities through innovative biochar solutions. Nestled in the heart of Prachin Buri Province, Thailand, our project aims to repurpose bamboo waste into a powerful tool for environmental sustainability, community empowerment, and economic growth.
From the start, we’ve recognized that true sustainability extends beyond environmental impact. It’s about empowering people, fostering leadership, and creating lasting change for communities. Through initiatives like our ‘Training the Trainer’ program, we are laying the groundwork for a brighter future.

Benefit both People and Planet
Why We Started WongPhai
In Prachin Buri’s bamboo-rich landscapes, generations of families have depended on bamboo cultivation for their livelihoods. However, the processing of bamboo leaves behind significant waste—offcuts that are either burned in open fires, releasing harmful emissions, or left to decompose, wasting their potential value.
At WongPhai, we saw an opportunity to turn this waste into something meaningful. By producing biochar, we reduce pollution, sequester carbon, improve soil health, and create value for local farmers and businesses.
Our Vision: Empowering People and the Planet
Our mission is simple yet impactful: to create solutions that benefit both communities and the environment. From our early days, we’ve prioritized three key pillars:
- Sustainable Waste Management: Converting bamboo waste into biochar to reduce pollution and prevent greenhouse gas emissions.
- Job Creation: Providing stable incomes and meaningful work for local communities.
- Community Empowerment: Building leadership skills and fostering resilience through training programs.

Building Leaders Through the ‘Training the Trainer’ Program
At the heart of our efforts is the ‘Training the Trainer’ program, a cornerstone of our approach to community-driven sustainability. This initiative equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to lead, enabling them to inspire change and promote sustainable practices in their communities.
Participants in this program gain hands-on experience in:
- Efficient biochar production using environmentally friendly methods.
- Transforming waste into valuable resources for farmers and businesses.
- Reducing pollution and improving soil health through biochar applications.
By empowering these leaders, we’re creating a ripple effect of knowledge and action that extends far beyond our immediate team.

Early Achievements: Laying the Foundation
Launching WongPhai has been both challenging and rewarding. In just over a year, we’ve made significant strides:
- Technology Setup: Installed GreenBox systems and upgraded Kon-Tiki kilns to track biochar production and carbon removal.
- Engaging Communities: Over 200 people have participated in training and hands-on work, contributing to a stronger, more connected network.
- Environmental Impact: Reduced air pollution, improved soil quality, and sequestered carbon to combat climate change.
Biochar: A Key to Sustainability
Biochar is at the core of WongPhai’s mission. Created through the pyrolysis of bamboo waste, this versatile product:
- Sequesters carbon, helping mitigate climate change.
- Enhances soil fertility and water retention, supporting sustainable agriculture.
- Has diverse applications, such as reducing methane emissions and managing odors on pig farms.
Strengthening Communities, One Leader at a Time
Our work goes beyond technical skills. WongPhai is about people—creating jobs, improving livelihoods, and keeping families together. We are especially focused on supporting disadvantaged community members, such as older workers and young people who might otherwise leave for urban jobs.
- Impact Story: Auntie Iet, a bamboo grower from Ban Hoi Community, shared how our practices increased her earnings per bamboo stalk from 5–10 baht to 45–50 baht, transforming her livelihood and enabling her to support her family.

Looking Ahead: Building a Legacy
Although we’ve achieved a lot, our journey is just beginning. WongPhai has big plans for the future:
- Scaling Operations: Expanding biochar production to sequester more carbon and reduce waste.
- Reaching More Communities: Launching new sites in bamboo-growing regions across Thailand.
- Fostering Collaboration: Partnering with universities and agricultural experts to refine methods and maximize impact.
By 2030, we aim to remove 36,000 tonnes of CO2, apply 20,300 tonnes of biochar to soils, and provide stable jobs for 60 people
